Istituto Romano di San Michele

The San Michele Institute of Rome is an I.P.A.B. (Istituto Pubblico di Assistenza e Beneficienza – Public Body for Assistance and Charity). The “IPABS” in Italy are public bodies existing since Middle Ages, in form of confraternities and other ecclesial and religious bodies. With the Crispi’s Act n° 6972 of 1890, the IPABS was instituted and became part of the state administration, even if they kept their autonomy.
The San Michele Institute of Rome was constituted by the Royal Decree n° 1353 of 7th May, 1928.

San Michele background

  1. The San Michele Ospice,  placed in Rome at Ripa Grande, was constituted by Pontiff Innocenzo XII on the 10th of May 1693, to be to older and children poor people’s benefit.
  2. At the beginning of XX century the Italian government merged together San Michele Ospice with S. Maria degli Angeli children’s house, risen in Rome on 1816 by Pontiff Pio VII, with the same aims pursued by Innocenzo XII. In the same period San Michele became a Public Body (an IPAB), and acquired the actual denomination I.R.S.M.
  3. Then, IRSM was translated from the place of Ripa Grande to the quarter of Tor Marancia (Sud Rome), on a area of 120.000 mq.

aims and activities

  1. San Michele Intistute of Rome has the scope to recovery, to maintain and to give assistance to older people over 65th, both male and female, self-sufficient and not self-sufficient.
  2.  In order to pursue this aim, IRSM has constituted an old people’s home and a health care residence (RSA)

San Michele development perspective

  1. In 2005/06 IRSM has carried out a new development plan, named “Cittadella della Solidarietà” (Solidarity Citadel). This plan aimed at enhancing the quality of the IRSM services, making it a refer point at local, regional and national level.
  2. The entailed principles of the plan are the followings:
  3. To promote more integration between IRSM and local community, volunteers, public institutions and active citizens;
  4. To develop new services in order to fix the main areas of social and health assistances, respecting the requirement of more integration between social, relational and health needs of the older people.
  5. To get from a culture of health services as simple “cure” of diseases to a culture of health services as “care” of entire human.
